We’re shining the spotlight on one of our clinical upskilling rockstars, our Clinical Training Coordinator, Hannah!
Hannah has been leading the clinical upskilling with Skills Centre Australia since its inception and was instrumental in developing the business in its early stages. She personally created our original clinical course catalogue, which has now almost doubled in size. Hannah continues to use her clinical background and unique nursing experiences to bring our courses to life, equipping students with the knowledge and confidence to handle any situation they encounter in their care journey.
Roots in Nursing
Hannah’s journey into the healthcare industry began early, inspired by her family’s deep-rooted history in nursing and midwifery. She knew she wanted to become a nurse from the moment she could talk. As a child, she carried a small nurse doll everywhere, proudly declaring her aspiration to be like her “Nanny Nurse.” With her aunt and grandmother working as nurses and midwives, Hannah admired their dedication and impact on people’s lives. Their stories of care and compassion fuelled her ambition to follow in their footsteps and help others.
After completing her university studies, Hannah pursued her passion for emergency care, setting her sights on becoming an Emergency Department (ED) nurse. She spent her graduate year gaining hands-on experience in rural nursing before returning to Adelaide to work in the ED at the Lyell McEwin Hospital. While she thrived in the fast-paced environment, an opportunity arose at KompleteCare for a role in community-based nursing, which piqued her interest.
Hannah found community nursing to be a return to the fundamentals of patient care—providing holistic, person-centered support while fostering deeper connections with clients. The ability to take the time to conduct thorough clinical assessments and engage with clients on a more personal level resonated with her. She quickly advanced to a team leader position, taking on additional responsibilities, including internal staff training on Medication management, Bowel care, and Diabetes support.
A New Path in Her Clinical Career
Recognising her passion for education and professional development, KompleteCare encouraged Hannah to take on a new challenge—training the next generation of Support Workers and Nurses. With the launch of Skills Centre Australia, Hannah transitioned into a full-time trainer role delivering professional and clinical upskilling, where she continues to make a significant impact. She values the opportunity to share her firsthand experiences from emergency and community nursing, helping students understand the complexities of medical conditions and the critical importance of comprehensive training. Her goal is not to scare the students but to equip them with the knowledge and confidence to handle real-world scenarios effectively, to which the students respond well.
Passion for Training and Clinical Upskilling
Among Hannah’s various courses, PEG Feeding has become one of her favourites. She enjoys the practical, hands-on approach of setting up interactive stations where students can actively engage in learning. Additionally, she is intensely interested in Dysphagia training and courses focusing on the gastrointestinal system, including Bowel and Stoma Care. Her enthusiasm for these subjects stems from their direct impact on improving the quality of life for clients, using clinical upskilling to reinforce the importance of skilled and compassionate care in the community.
Life Beyond the Classroom
Outside of her professional role, Hannah maintains a well-rounded lifestyle. She enjoys going to the gym, spending time with her cats, and catching up with friends and family. At home, she likes to experiment with baking, favouring simple recipes like slices, biscuits, and cakes—though she admits anything with too many ingredients is a dealbreaker!
Overcoming Challenges as a Trainer
Stepping into a training role came with its challenges. Initially, balancing multiple responsibilities—working as a nurse, leading a team, and developing training programs—was overwhelming. Teaching for the first time was a daunting experience, as she navigated the transition from clinical practice to instructing others. However, as the Skills Centre expanded and she gained more experience, Hannah confidently grew into her role. Training and clinical upskilling have now become second nature to her, and she embraces her natural, engaging teaching style. She believes in making education interactive and enjoyable, ensuring students gain essential skills and retain knowledge through hands-on learning and meaningful discussions.
Future Goals and Aspirations
Looking ahead, Hannah hopes to achieve personal and professional goals by the end of 2025. On a personal level, she aspires to go skydiving in Torquay and complete the Pinnacles Walk at Halls Gap. Professionally, she is eager to see the Skills Centre continue to grow and hopes to welcome another full-time trainer to the team by the end of the year, further expanding their training capabilities.
